The Collection District Basic Summary Files (Preliminary) present summary characteristics derived from preliminary processing of data, of persons and dwellings for every Collection District (CD) in Australia. Preliminary processing was based on the total population, unlike other 1976 Census Summary File releases. For further information on this sampling process, see Making Sense of Census 76.
The record for each CD includes geographic area codes for. State, Census Division, Census Sub-division, CD, Statistical Division, Statistical Subdivision, LGA, Locality, Section of State, Commonwealth Electoral Division (1974 boundaries), State Electoral Division, and Postcode. The table information is made up of 10 tables giving data for both persons and dwellings. The tables include counts for males and females by single ages, marital status and birthplace; and the number of occupied dwellings and unoccupied private dwellings.
The Summary Files contain 2 files of preliminary CD summary data. The first file contains data for NSW and Victoria. The second file contains data for all other States and Territories.
Each logical record contains one record for each CD. The first file contains 14638 records. The second file contains 9976 records. Each record is 960 characters long. The first 56 characters contain geographic indicative information and the remaining 904 characters contain counts or totals grouped to form 10 tables.

The table information is made up of 10 tables containing 226 cells giving data for both persons and dwellings. Each record contains, after the indicative information, a series of 4-character fields each representing a cell within the 10 tables. The tables are in two sections:
1. Dwelling and Person counts (1-4)
2. Single entry tables of person characteristics (5-10).

Sex codes - Sex is implied within each table; there are therefore no codes associated.
Age codes - Single ages 0-98, 99 and over, Not stated. The codes are implied by the cell number listed in the table above.
Marital Status codes - The codes are implied by the cell number and are:
