Area

This is an 8 digit numeric code showing the area of the CD. The area has been computed for all CD's in Capital City Statistical Divisions and all CD's in Statistical Districts (i.e. those CD's with values in Fields 54 and 55).

In the remaining CD's (i.e. those CD's that have no values in Fields 54 and 55) the area was derived from the 1971 CD Master File. In these cases the area is only an approximation for those CD's whose 71/76 comparability indicator is 0. The area of CD's with a 71/76 comparability indicator of other than 0 should be ignored. The area of CD's in 1971 was expressed in terms of hundredths of square miles, and the area of 1976 CD's is expressed in Hectares. Therefore, a conversion factor of 1 hectare = 1/l000th of a square mile x 2.58599 was applied.
