Record Type

The possible values a Record Type can take and their meanings are:

	1 State Header
	2 Statistical Division Header
	3 Statistical Subdivision (District) Header
	4 Local Government Area (LGA)
	5 LGA Section/Locality
	6 Statistical Subdivision (District) Trailer
	7 Statistical Division Trailer
	8 State Trailer

A Header Record (record types 1 to 3) carries the name of the geographic area. A Trailer Record (record types 6 to 8) carries a description of the level of the geographic area in the form TOTAL DIVISION etc. and 1971 data for the geographic area.

There are 8 different record types. The table below shows the fields used (marked X) in each record type.

If a value for a field is not available, N/A is entered left justified with blank right fill.

Each State, Statistical Division and Statistical Subdivision/District has a Header Record and Trailer Record. Each LGA and LGA Section has a single record, except in the City of Brisbane (see below).

For each LGA Record at least one LGA Section Record is held. The LGA Section Record shows Section of State, State Area and Locality Codes. The locality name on the LGA Section Record can be one of the following:

a) LGA is part of a larger locality, LGA Section Record shows this locality - e.g. MELBOURNE in the case of ALTONA(C).

b) The LGA Section is a locality in its own right, e.g. COORAN in NOOSA(S).

c) The LGA Section has Section of State Code 3, Rural, the locality name will be BALANCE RURAL.

d) The LGA Section has a Section of State Code 1 or 2, and the LGA has no other LGA Section, i.e. the locality is wholly urban, the locality name will be the same as the LGA name, e.g. GYMPIE(C) is the LGA name, GYMPIE is the locality name in LGA Section Record.

e) The LGA Section has a Section of State Code 3 and the LGA has no other LGA Section, i.e. the LGA is wholly rural, the locality name on the LGA Section Record will be RURAL.

f) The LGA Section Record is broken down further by State Area Code.

The City of Brisbane is one legal LGA, which is subdivided into a number of suburbs. The majority of these suburbs are equivalent to Census LGA's, some suburbs however have been combined to form Census LGA's. In order that these individual suburbs can be identified the following conventions have been observed:

a) The LGA name is followed by ETC e.g. ANSTEAD, ETC.

b) A separate LGA Section Record is created for each suburb, which is identified by its State Area Code and in the Name Field the name of the suburb is proceeded by an asterisk. In the example of Anstead the name on the LGA Section Records reads - RURAL * ANSTEAD, RURAL ~ PULLENVALE and RURAL * UPPER BROOKFIELD respectively. It should be noted that this convention is followed only for the legal LGA, City of Brisbane.

In cases where a locality crosses LGA boundaries, the LGA Section Record for all LGA's in which the locality occurs will show the same locality code and locality name for the locality. For example, the locality TORQUAY crosses from Bellarine Shire into South Barwon Shire. In both LGA's an LGA Section Record will be held showing locality code 36330 and locality name TORQUAY.

A Census LGA which is split by Statistical Division or Subdivision/ District boundary will have more than one LGA Record, i.e. it will have one LGA Record in each Statistical Division and Subdivision/district in which it lies. The various parts will be identified by the LGA name followed by PART A, PART B. PART C, etc. as required, but the LGA number will be the same. LGA Section Records following the LGA Record will refer to the appropriate part of the LGA only. For example, Bellarine Shire is split by the Geelong Statistical District boundary, and two LGA Records will be held, both having the LGA number 020, but identified as BELLARINE, PART A and BELIARDNE, PART B respectively.
