State Area Code
This is a four digit numeric code used by each State to identify each legal Local Government Area (LGA) or LGA part where legal LGA's have been split by statistical boundaries. The States allocate the codes as outlined below:
N.S.W. - Based on numeric numbering within Statistical Division, Subdivision/District in alphabetical LGA order. The code is designed so that it is sequential throughout N.S.W., but the first code used in each Statistical Subdivision/District has either 1 or 5 as its last digit.
Victoria - Assigned alphabetically to LGA's within Statistical Divisions. Where LGA's have been split for statistical purposes within the Statistical Division, the 2nd parts have been assigned separate State Area Codes in alphabetical order after the rest of the LGA's in the Statistical Division have been assigned their codes.
Queensland - Based on a 3 digit Queensland Local Authority code. For Brisbane City the code is assigned to suburbs alphabetically and has a value in the range 0001 to 0178. Next the State Area Code is assigned to the remaining LGA's(or parts thereof) in the Brisbane Statistical Division, followed by the rest of the LGA's in Queensland in Statistical Division and Subdivision/District order.
South Australia - Assigned alphabetically to LGA's within State Regions and Sub-regions (these are different to both Census and Statistical Divisions and Subdivisions).
Western Australia - Assigned to LGA's prior to the re-organization of Statistical Divisions on 1 January 1976. As a result the codes bear no relation to present Statistical Divisions.
Tasmania - The first two digits are zero, the next two digits are the same as the last 2 digits of the Tasmanian State Area Code list.
Northern Territory and A.C.T. - Allocated alphabetically to suburbs and urban centres within Statistical Divisions and Subdivisions/Districts.
Migratory: This has been given State Area Code 0999 in each State or the Northern Territory. The A.C.T. has no Migratory.
