1981 LGA code

This is a three digit numeric code assigned to LGA's ordered alphabetically within each State. The code begins at 001 for each State with the last code being attributed to migratory CD's. ('Migratory' is a balancing item to include those persons enumerated on board vessels in and between Australian ports, or on board long distance trains, buses or aircraft.)

For census purposes, LGA's include administrative areas such as Shires, District Councils, Boroughs, Cities, Municipalities and Towns.

Because the City of Brisbane, the Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory do not have legal LGA's equivalent in size to other States and capital cities, they have been divided, for statistical purposes, into census LGA's.
