Record Type

The eight record types in the file are:

1 = State header
2 = Statistical division header
3 = Statistical subdivision header
4 = LGA
5 = LGA section
6 = Statistical subdivision trailer
7 = Statistical division trailer
8 = State trailer

A header record (record types 1 to 3) carries the name of the geographic area. A trailer record (record types 6 to 8) indentifies the end of a level in the geographic areas hierarchy and the sum total of 1976 Census counts for the related areas at a lower geographic level.

The table below shows the fields used (marked x) in each record type. The values 00, 000, 99, 999 are actual values held in the field where shown. Fields left blank in the table are filled with 0's.

If a value for a field of 1976 data is not available, the field is filled with '9999999'.
