Census division
These are the major control areas used for the collection of census data. Each
is represented by a two digit numeric code allocated sequentially, from 0 1, in
geographic order within each State/ Territory. For the 1986 Census, Australia
was divided into 162 census divisions (132 in 1981). Census divisions generally
correspond to the Commonwealth electoral divisions existing at the time of the
census although, because of their size, some Commonwealth electoral divisions
are split into two or more census divisions. The split divisions are:
